‘Young Frankenstein’ tickles the funny bones
October, the month of Halloween, may seem the perfect time to present Young Frankenstein. But it wasn’t for its eerie qualities that artistic director Richard Hitchler chose the play for Theatre 55.
“I usually try to do musicals that make a political or social statement,” Hitchler said. “This time around, I felt we needed a little humor. Choosing Young Frankenstein came out of the need for us as a community to have some levity and be able to laugh. We haven’t had that opportunity in what feels like a long time.”

Monstrous laughs with ‘Young Frankenstein’
Actor Dane Stauffer of St. Paul loves Mel Brooks’ movie “Young Frankenstein,” and he’s expecting the musical version of the show to be just as funny when it’s brought to life at the hands of Theatre 55. The show runs Oct. 9-25 at the Gremlin Theatre in St. Paul.
Theatre 55 casts actors ages 55 and older. Stauffer says, “As someone who is aging creatively, I enjoy seeing other folks get involved too without any barriers. There’s so much talent on the stage, and so much talent behind the scenes in directing and everything.”

“It’s a great choice for this time and for this company, and it’s one of my favorite shows that they’ve done.”
“Theatre 55’s Artistic Director Richard Hitchler directs this fantastic cast with just the right mix of humor and heart. It’s worth noting that not all of the actors in Theatre 55 shows are professional actors, but they’re all so present and passionate and invested in the storytelling.”
